Antique-firearms auctioneer Gregory Martin is going great guns. Since
we profiled Martin, 63, and the
San Francisco auction house he set up in 2002,
he has racked up four big sales, with a total take of $16 million. Martin reports that while
prices for European arms are still moving sideways, top-flight
American guns are bringing ever-higher bids. Martin's November auction hit $123,750 for a pair of
pistols made in the mid-19th century by the Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., the predecessor company to
Winchester. This particular specimen was formerly owned by King Farouk of Egypt.
